The Biggest Trends at the Teen Choice Awards 2012

The crème de la crème of Hollywood gathered at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City for the Teen Choice Awards to celebrate teen icons in TV, music, film, sports, fashion, comedy and the Web. A total of 134 million votes were collected for this year’s awards from fans aged 13 to 19 in more than 80 categories. As usual, a glamorous event like this brings out all the fashionistas and a few trends really stood out this year.

As we already know, a big trend this summer are bright colors, which were also reflected at the awards show by celebrities, such as Zooey Deschanel and Selena Gomez. “New Girl Zooey Deschanel was wearing a bright blue dress by Monique Lhuillier paired with black pumps and a black-gold hardcase clutch. Lucy Hale, who won Choice TV Actress: Drama for Pretty Little Liars, hit the “summer nail” on the head with her orange Wes Gordon dress, which she paired with golden heels and a loose braid as her chosen hairstyle for the evening. Shay Mitchell let her lime green dress by Donna Karan speak for itself by keeping the  accessories to a minimum. Justin Bieber’s better half, Selena Gomez, whose band Selena Gomez & The Scene won in the category Choice Music Group, lit up the red carpet with a pink mini dress by DSquared2. Actress and singer, Chelsea Kane, offered a nice alternative to a traditional red carpet dress with colorful Alice + Olivia shorts, a French Connection top and bright blue Aldo pumps.

Another trend that stood out at the awards show was print, whether it was floral, neo-tribal or simple brightly colored prints. Kevin McHale’s co-host for the evening and winner in the categories Choice Summer Music Star and Choice Twit, Demi Lovato, definitely attracted attention with her feathered Falguni & Shane Peacock mini dress and her slicked back, high ponytail. New Girl’s Hannah Simone was seen in a floral print Mary Katrantzou dress and Vampire DiariesKat Graham mixed the print and  bright color trend with her cute Mara Hoffman mini dress. Disney sweetheart, Debby Ryan, and 19-year-old Victoria Justice had the same idea as Graham, incorporating print and bright colors in their outfits. Ryan was wearing a Bibhu Mohapatra Resort dress with cut out shoulders and Justice showed off an asymmetric high neck dress by Gomez-Gracia.

The awards show proved once again that women can never go wrong with a nice blazer. Ellen DeGeneres, winner in the category Choice Comedian, was dressed in white, adding a touch of black with a simple blazer. Singer Carly Rae Jepsen and actress Kristen Stewart took the timeless trend one step further and attended the award show in a print blazer. Jepsen, who won in the categories Choice Summer Song for “Call Me Baby” and Choice Music: Breakout Artist, was wearing a Lisa Ho ensemble and Stewart a Roberto Cavalli RE13 blazer and black leather pants. Stewart was among the biggest winners of the evening, taking home a total of three awards.

Last but not least, several ballerina inspired dresses could be spotted on the red carpet. Show stealer Taylor Swift, who won in the categories Choice Single by a Female Artist for “Eyes Open”, Choice Female Artist, Choice Female Country Artist and Choice Country Song for “Sparks Fly”, was wearing a white backless chiffon dress by one of her favorite designers, Maria Lucia Hohan. Dancer and actress, Kathryn McCormick, followed the same trend, wearing a cute ballerina style dress, as did Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario in Maria Lucia Hohan.
